At some point in our lives, each and every one of us has had a day where it feels as if everything is crumbling beneath our fingertips. It’s a struggle to get out of bed and it feels like an impossibility to face the world. But what if that struggle goes on for days, weeks or even years?
Depression can leave you feeling as fragile as bone china. You can become increasingly withdrawn and you start to cancel on friends or family, retreating into yourself. You end up cutting yourself off from the world, terrified that the world won’t understand.
Trust us when we say this – everyone who has suffered from Depression understands this. We know how you feel and we know how scary and overwhelming Depression can be. Most of all, we know that it can leave you feeling like an outsider and as if no one understands. Even if you haven’t suffered Depression first-hand, it can be a struggle and we know that carers, friends and family need support too.
You’re not an outsider. All our mentors have experience depression in some way. This is a pre-requisite of being a mentor for us so that you can be assured that we will understand. Most of all, we know that talking to those closest to you can be terrifying. You don’t want to feel like a burden or you may feel that they won’t understand. We can assure you that not only will we understand but we won’t feel burdened by you. When you feel like the rest of the world has you, we will be right here beside you, ready and waiting for you to blurt it all out.
Every mentor has experienced depression themselves in some shape or form. If you’re after a non-judgmental, confidential, friendly ear then you’ve come to the right place. You may be black, white, young, old, gay, bisexual, straight or an alien from Mars – depression doesn’t discriminate and neither do we.
